Street Push Carts in Seoul: City-Walking Performance,

2022, push cart sculpture and 10 volunteers, performance video 11min 58sec

Korean government-funded research project: Street Push Carts in Seoul.
The elders making a living on push carts captivated me, highlighting the social vulnerabilities threaded within societies. Based on fieldwork and interviews, I fabricated a push cart sculpture. Instead of reproducing the push carts that I observed on the street, I designed my own push cart based on the research process of how I came to build my perspective on the push carts. The transparent look of the sculpture gives you a sense that you could see-through, however, there are lots of layers. The layers are built with patterns and rigid structure.

I organized a city-walking performance with 10 volunteers. During the five-hour journey, each participant pushed the cart sculpture, traversed the cityscape, and shared their stance on overlooked social structures. The project helped me grow as an artist and, through participation and investigation, improve my understanding of the world.
